Here are some snippets that we’ll be sharing in class:Īutumn – from the 4 seasons Played by the Orchestra of st Lukes with animations by children from schools in New York. Vivaldi was a virtuoso violinist and so it’s no wonder that the violin is the star of The Four Seasons – probably his most well known work.Įach of the four concertos (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) gives the violin a chance to conjure up sounds and pictures from each period of the year, from barking dogs and mosquitos, to summer storms and birds happily singing the arrival of spring. Vivaldi went on to teach at a girls’ orphanage where he composed much of his music. An enormous part of that culture throughout time has been music. He was given the nickname of “the Red Priest” because of his flaming red hair. At the age of 25 Vivaldi became a priest. Vivaldi was taught violin by his father and regularly performed with him in Venice. Another baroque composer this time from Italy. Vivaldi was in fact very innovative in the forms he used for his compositions, in the first instance, he favoured the soloist concerto and laid the premises for. His innovations here anticipate the early Classical style. For October our composer of the month is Vivaldi. These concertos alone show him to be one of the most important composers of the late Baroque.
